On May 15, 1905, a railroad land auction started the Las Vegas township. The auction was held near what is now Fremont street and Main street. Las Vegas was incorporated in 1911. Downtown Las Vegas in general, and Fremont street in particular have been an integral part of the community long before Bugsy Seigel envisioned the Flamingo Casino.

Fremont street is vintage Las Vegas. It has been the site of many "firsts". In 1925, the first paved street. In 1931, the first Nevada gaming license, issued to the Northern Club in Fremont street. In 1932, the first elevator in the Apache Hotel. In 1956, the first high-rise building, the Fremont Hotel. Downtown Las Vegas had 36 years of history by the time the El Rancho opened as the first casino on the Las Vegas Strip in 1941.

Fremont street began to transform into Glitter Gulch when neon lights were invented in the 1940's. Then Vegas-Vic was unveiled by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce which was erected atop the Pioneer Club in 1951. It became an icon for Fremont street.

The $70 million Fremont Street Experience was conceived in 1995 as a partnership between The Fremont Street Experience Company, owned by the collection of downtown casino operators and the city of Las Vegas. You haven´t seen Las Vegas until you´ve seen the Fremont Street Experience. Whether it´s the neon lights, the crowd or the classic casinos, there´s no shortage of Vegas authenticities or nostalgia here.

Since its inseption there has been $17 million in upgrades and a new 550,000-watt sound system. Positioned 90 feet above Fremont street, the attraction stretches 1,400 feet and consists of 12.5 million synchronized LED modules, including 180 strobes and eight robotic mirrors per block. It's capable of producing millions of color combinations, animation and video feeds, allowing the display to switch from a swirling ocean setting to a television broadcast. It is called Viva Vision.

The Fremont Street Experience is also home to some of the most recognizable Las Vegas icons. Many other vintage hotel and casino signs, which are part of the larger Neon Museum collection, now dot the pedestrian mall and the courtyard of the adjoining Neonopolis Center, a $100 million, 250,000-square-foot retail center.

Installation of the canopy transformed Fremont Street Experience to draw millions of visitors annually to enjoy the light and sound shows, stroll the promenade, dance to live entertainment, sip exotic drinks, snack on shrimp cocktails and enjoy the restaurants and other hotel amenities.

Other points of interest in downtown Las Vegas include Union Park, Art district and of course the all new high rise condo developments, modeled after 'Gas Lamp Quarter' in downtown San Diego.

Union Park is a proposed mixed use development in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The city of Las Vegas is undertaking the development of a 61-acre parcel located on land purchased from the Union Pacific Railroad. The city acquired the land in 1995 as part of a redevelopment effort to draw tourists and locals to downtown Las Vegas. The Union Park development will be one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the country.

The Project will include:

  • The Smith Center for the Performing Arts
  • 469,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space
  • 15,800 parking spaces contained within vertical structures
  • 3,600 high-rise residential units
  • The Lou Ruvo Brain Institute
  • New City Hall
  • 1,750 hotel rooms
  • A 57 story World Jewelry Center
  • 2.2 million square feet of Class A office space
  • The original plan to include a baseball stadium within the Union Park project, has since been removed.

The city of Las Vegas has been awarded $360,000 in state funds to be used for the design, fabrication and installation of two gateway features and eight street topper signs in the the Las Vegas Arts District.

Developers are flocking to the downtown area. Renaissance Towers, H.U.E Lofts, Stanhi Tower, Juhl Las Vegas, Streamline Tower, Verge and many others have their site plans approved or are under construction. Click here for more information on high rise projects in Las Vegas.
