Located between the dazzle of Las Vegas and the awesome marvels of the Hoover Dam, is Boulder City. An oasis of city parks, golf courses and open spaces. Created to house the workers who built the Hoover Dam, Boulder City has been a significant and integral part of the dam construction also known as the Boulder Canyon Project.
In 1931 Boulder
City was envisioned by the Federal Government as the first "planned
community" in America. Designed as a model town where the American
people could look for hope of a better future. The city planning was
done in the midst of the Great Depression. Bureau of Reclamation, which
originally built the town, prohibited alcohol sales, membership in
unions and all forms of gambling. The Bureau was in control of the city
until 1958. Boulder City was officially incorporated on January 4,
1960. The residents approved the city charter prohibiting gambling
within the city limits. This provision still exists, making Boulder
City the only location in Nevada where gambling is illegal.
The many hotels and motels in Boulder city provide convenient access to Lake Mead. There are several city parks that provide the opportunity for family picnics and community events. Boulder City offers two championship golf courses in addition to a swimming pool, tennis courts, a racquetball complex, lush athletic fields and a BMX bicycle track.
Public schools of Boulder City fall under the
jurisdiction of the Clark County School District. Boulder City High
School serves grades nine through 12 and has an average enrollment of
700-750 students. Garrett Middle School serves grades six through nine,
King Elementary School serves grades three through five, and Mitchell
Elementary School serves grades K through two. Construction
of the Hoover Dam created Lake Mead, the world's deepest man-made lake.
The Lake Mead National Recreation area is a gateway to year-round
recreation. Fishing, boating, hiking, mountain biking, sight seeing,
and camping are some of the favorite activities for visitors of the
area. The Colorado River provides additional recreational
opportunities, including river rafting trips.
The Boulder City Municipal Airport, the first city airport in Nevada, offers flight services for both private and commercial airplanes.
Even though it is the 3rd largest city in Nevada by area, Boulder City maintains strict controls on growth. There is a limit of 120 building permits per year. Hotels are also restricted to no more than 35 rooms.
